1 - Playing Ball in Delaware

DE Exit 1B: The  2007 US Team Handball Open National Championships will be held in Newark, DE the weekend of April 6-8, 2007. This new exciting Olympic sport will have more than 350 athletes descend on the University of Delaware’s Newark campus to compete in 3 divisions: Men’s Elite, Men’s Open and Women’s Open.
Though the modern version of team handball was developed in Denmark in 1897, it traces its origins back to ancient Greece and is played in 183 countries, with 31 million players, trainers, officials and referees. Team Handball is a fast-paced game with 2 teams of 7 players, including a goalie. The sport combines elements of soccer and basketball as players pass, catch and dribble a small ball with their hands. Players score goals by throwing the ball past a goalkeeper into the net for one point. Games consist of two 30-minute halves with a typical match lasting about an hour and 15-minutes. Scores usually run into the mid-20s.

The games will be held at the Field House on Friday and Saturday from 10a m to 8 pm and Sunday 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and at the  Carpenter Sports Building on Friday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m to 1 p.m. The finals of the Championships will occur on Sunday afternoon and spectators will be admitted free of charge throughout the entire event.

For more information, visit www.udel.edu for campus maps or call: (302) 831-2737 (Office of Sport Management Program) until Saturday April 7th.

2 - Fun and Fakes at the Bruce Museum

CT Exit 3: What fun you can have at an art museum. The Bruce Museum in Greenwich has an exhibit entitled “Bop and Whir: Toys of the 20th Century”, which is hands-on and family friendly, showing the evolution of toys that roll, float or fly and ones you can use to build with, as well as the technology that makes them work.

Then from May 12- Sept 2 “Fakes and Forgeries: The Art of Deception” will show you 50 examples of paintings and sculpture from the Middle Ages to the modern era using techniques of the most successful forgers. Explanations of the lengths to which they went to produce authentic looking art include scraping paint off old canvases, several forms of fabricating aging, and the use of authentic materials; this is balanced against the techniques used to expose the deceptions:  x-rays, pigment analysis, spectrography, carbon dating, etc. Phone: (203) 869-0376.  www.brucemuseum.org

3 - Join the War in Virginia

VA Exit 52: Each year in Petersburg on the 3rd weekend of April (this year April 21-22), there is a Revolutionary war encampment commemorating the battle fought here on April 25, 1781 on the actual site that Lord Charles Cornwallis' troops occupied in May 1781. This event draws many authentically recreated American, British, German, French, Native American, and Spanish units that document their lineage to actual service in the American Revolution. It is held at Battersea Plantation on the West End of Washington St. (Less than 2 mi. from I-95!)
Throughout the weekend, on these 35 acres, there are continuing military camp-life and battlefield demonstrations of infantry, cavalry and artillery as well as a field hospital, various crafts, camp cooking, and a range of “Sutlers” selling 18th century wares. A significant event is the Saturday morning memorial service, held in honor of Major General William Phillips who commanded the British Force in the Battle of Petersburg. Phillips died of a fever 3 weeks following the battle and was buried nearby in Blandford Church Cemetery on Crater Rd. Admission to the Plantation is free and there is plenty of free parking. Hours: Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday  9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

4 - Bugaboo Creek is for Kids

RI Exit 15: In July 2006 Consumer Reports did a survey of our favorite chain restaurants, both by flavor (steak, Italian, seafood) and by type: special occasions, take out, etc. For outings with children, Bugaboo Creek, a Canadian-themed  (talking pine trees and buffalo) restaurant was near the top of the list. Adjectives to describe the food are borrowed from Canadiana: moosebreath burger, dog team sandwich, snowbird, Mountie. For all you hungry travelers, expect to find large shareable portions of prime rib and hearty steaks, baked onion and ale (ah, Canadian beer!) soup and Canadian salmon, but also chicken, salad and sandwiches for the others.
Try the delicious local IBC diet root beer while the kids crayon in their coloring books. Other location on I-95: Exit 4 in Delaware. Phone: (302) 283-0615. www.bugaboocreeksteakhouse.com
