1 - Free Air Fare

MD Exit 9: Andrews Air Force Base offers a Joint Service Open House and (one of the nation’s largest) Air Shows on May 19-20. You have an opportunity to get up close and personal with aircraft from all the Armed Services and you’ll get to oogle the special aerial attractions, such as the Thunderbirds and the skydiving Golden Knights US Army Parachute team. The base is the home of "Air Force One" and the air lift wing, which provides air transportation for the President, Vice-President, cabinet members and other high-ranking US officials as well as foreign dignitaries.
You cannot park on the base - head for the FedEx Field at Exit 16 or 17, where shuttle buses will provide transportation to Andrews. The buses will also run from the Branch Ave Metro Station Exit 7.  Hours:  8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is FREE.  Tel: Public Affairs office: 301-981-4424   www.jsoh.org/show.html

2 - A Taste of Alligator, Anyone?

NJ Exit 5: Set aside Saturday, Sunday or Monday May 26, 27 or 28 for the Powhatan Renape Nation American Indian Arts Festival. Only tribal members are allowed to exhibit their traditional and contemporary work, so silversmiths, potters, sand painters, beaders, sculptors, carvers, drum makers, weavers and basket makers gather here to show their wares. The continuous entertainment pounds it out all day while you wander around sampling Indian foods: venison, caribou, wild rice, Navajo tacos, three sisters rice, alligator, corn soup, or meat or vegetarian dishes. You can try your hand at archery and corn pounding or participate in a friendship dance. Visitors will also have the opportunity to learn about the instincts of the live wolves and Eastern buffalo. Rankokus Indian Reservation. From Exit 5 follow the red arrows to Rancocas Road, Westampton Township, Burlington County. Hours: 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Admission: $10 for adults, $ 5 for seniors and children 6-12. Parking is FREE. Tel: 609-261-4747 www.powhatan.org

3 - Sleep in a Caboose

SC Exit 33: KOA Point South - Even if you are not a camper, you just may want to think about this sleeping option. At this RV park, you can stay overnight in a converted caboose, a trolley car or in a little Hansel and Gretel cabin. The caboose is actually sitting on train tracks and has a front and back platform; the log cottage has a porch and wooden swing and just enough room for the beds. The trolley came here all the way from Charleston and is glass windowed, so you have the whole outside inside during the day, but can close the blinds at night. The facilities are sparse - bring your own sheets, pillows or sleeping bags to put on the double bed for the folks and 2 singles for the kids. They have heat and AC, but no bathrooms. For those and for showers, there's the main shower building nearby. Take advantage of the whole RV park with lakes, forests, picnic grounds, etc. for your enjoyment. If you plan to stay here after about June 15th you will be able to enjoy the new Swimming Mermaid Coffee House too. Tel 800-726-5733. www.pointsouthkoa.com

4 - A Day in Old New Castle

DE Exit 5A: For the past 83 years, “A Day in Old New Castle” has encouraged visitors to step back in time to when New Castle served as the capital of the colony of Delaware. The day is unique, because  New Castle is not a reconstructed or preserved historical district but a fully living residential town. One day a year, residents open up about 10 of  their private homes (and 3 museums homes) and  gardens to the public. Many conduct personal tours of their properties, providing glimpses of the continuous adaptation of old structures to modern life. Enjoy period music and join children in colonial costume dancing and playing colonial games throughout the day. At times during the event you will come across: re-enactors, choral evensong, open hearth cooking, Susquehanna consort, an archaeological dig, town crier, children's crafts/games/May pole on the Green,   harpsichord and flute recitals and spinning demonstrations. Hours: Saturday, May 19 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For info, Immanuel Episcopal Church on the Green, Tel: 877-496-9498 or 302-328-2413  www.dayinoldnewcastle.org/events.html

5 - Watermelon Seed Spitting Contest

SC: Yup, really. What a fun pit stop for the whole family at the South Carolina Welcome Center (going north on I-95 just south of exit 5). During National Tourism Week, the Greater Hardeeville Chamber of Commerce and the SC Department of Parks offer this Annual Watermelon Welcome. On May 18th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., you can get a sweet slice of ice cold water melon at the Visitor Center and then see how far you can spit a seed. Token prizes will be handed out all day long. While you are enjoying your fresh snack, you can peruse the twenty or so booths featuring SC stuff: fireworks, museums, sweet grass basket weaving and motels, and the wildlife department usually shows up with a live alligator. Yup, really. Tel: 843-784-3275.  www.hardeevillechamberofcommerce.com

5 - Join us at the Round Table and the Big Apple

CT Exit 21: If you want to meet us in person or ask questions about a summer vacation, plan on coming to the Borders in Fairfield, CT on May 23 at 7 pm. We will be participating in an authors’ round table discussion with: Elaine Alexander (mystery) Death at  Deacon Pond, Michael Altieri (thriller) Dogwood Season, Ana Mollinedo Mims (business) Keeping the Faith and Leisa Taylor (religion) The God of Human Blood. It should be a fun event. Tel: 203-256-1619.

NY Exit 1: On June 1st and 2nd our book. Drive I-95: Exit by Exit Info, Maps, History and Trivia will be displayed at Book Expo America (and is a finalist for the Indie Excellence Award - come see if we win), and we will be walking the aisles in costume. If you find us, we’ll give you a FREE book and autograph it. Yup, really.  Hours: 9 a.m.-5 p.m., Jacob Javits Convention Center, 11th Ave between 34th and 38th Streets.

What's inside Drive I-95 :
Look ahead exit by exit to see which motels (with 800 numbers), gas stations, restaurants, campgrounds, 24-hour pharmacies, auto mechanics, radio stations or radar traps are there, and where you can stay with your pet. We share our stories of the road : history on I-95, museums, trivia, towns to explore or places to run the kids. These can be read for entertainment during the drive, and may entice you to stop, stretch your legs and discover someplace new.
