GA Exit 3: The locals told us about a new BBQ shack that opened up in Kingsland
called Blue's Original Barbeque. Well, it turned out to be so yummy that we went back twice in 2 days - and we're Northerners! You can grab your vittles at this new little hut (to the left of
the Chevron station) and eat at the two outside tables or attempt to eat in your
car. Watch Blue working the smoker (stoked with hickory, pecan and oak) when you
order your pork, beef, chicken, ribs or turkey legs smothered in his addictive
sticky sweet, mustardy peppery sauce. We both loved the sides of smoky beans;
while the potato salad was Sandra's favorite, Stan liked the traditional slaw.
1330 E. Boone Ave. right at the exit. Tel: 912-576-8682.

NJ Exit 3: For real old-fashioned spookiness, the Pinelands
Preservation Alliance in NJ offers a three-hour outdoor nighttime
program designed to introduce people to the fascinating natural history
and folklore of the Pinelands, using the Jersey Devil legend as the
theme. The hunts begin at 7 pm at a remote location in Wharton State
Forest in the heart of the Pinelands. It starts with an old-fashioned
campfire (bring your hot dogs & marshmallows!), and nerves are
calmed with some good old-time music. After that the legend of the Jersey Devil is recounted, and the group sets off, with a little ghostly light from the moon, on a hike (1½ miles) in the dark to see if they can find him. Along the way, more spooky tales are retold, which are part of the folklore of the Pinelands. The campsite is primitive, with nothing but a hand pump for water and 2 outhouses. You might want to bring a folding chair, and you need to call and register ahead of time, since there is only space for 20 and they fill up fast. The next dates are: October 19, October 26, November 2 and November 16, and more will be scheduled. Phone: 609-859-8860. Price: $10 per person. www.pinelandsalliance.org
