One of the highlights of the evening had comedian Sam Bernard, one of the greatest stars of the time, singing, “Who Paid the Rent for Mrs. Rip Van Winkle When Rip Van Winkle Was Away?” One of the first important shows to open here in 1916 was Robinson Crusoe, Jr., starring Al Jolson, who became the greatest musical comedy performer of the day. He was followed through the 20's and 30's by Ethel, John and Lionel Barrymore, Will Rogers, W.C. Fields, George M. Cohan, Sara Bernhardt, Eddie Cantor, The Marx Brothers and Lunt and Fontanne. In 1943, New Haven audiences went wild over an unlikely musical comedy about cowboys entitled Away We Go but you may know it better as it was named on Broadway - Oklahoma! The show’s composer, Richard Rogers, held the world premiers of Carousel, South Pacific, The King and I, and The Sound of Music here. Tennessee Williams’ play, A Streetcar Named Desire, had its premiere at the Shubert in 1947. Not only was a great play born on opening night, but a new star, Marlon Brando, emerged. Other cast members included Jessica Tandy, Karl Malden, and Kim Hunter. This season, you too can enjoy a piece of this history as the Tony-winning production of Hair will be here Oct 22-24. On Oct 29-30, Brian McKnight and Vivica A. Fox star in Cheaper to Keep Her a romantic comedy by the NAACP Award-winning playwright, Je'Caryous Johnson. For Thanksgiving (Nov 26-28) you can fast forward to A Christmas Carol and then you can laugh yourself into the New Year with Spamalot (Dec 30-Jan 2). Even if you don’t have a chance to see a play, you can take a "Backstage Tour" of the theatre. [2]www.shubert.com 2 - Anne's Blog FL Exit 131: The Sunrise Theatre for the Performing Arts is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, having opened its doors in 1923. After becoming the center of all St. Lucie County's cultural activities, it unfortunately closed its doors in 1983, due to the decline of the downtown area and a refusal to convert to multi-screen operation. In 1997, the theatre was purchased by the St. Lucie Preservation Association, and has been completely renovated. It is once again the cultural center of St Lucie County as well as the Treasure Coast. Broadway shows are interspersed with alot of music, ballet and comedy here. The Diary of Anne Frank is the next show up on Nov 19th. Anne Frank’s words have kept her spirit alive in the minds and hearts of readers all over the world. On Jan 9th, Ed Asner will star in the solo performance drama, “FDR”, based upon Dore Schary’s Broadway hit “Sunrise at Campobello”, which ran 70 weeks on Broadway. When you walk the halls think of Joe Dimaggio, Charles Lindburgh, Eleanor Roosevelt, JFK and Warren Buffett, who also walked them.
